Even though Iceland has a small population, the island itself is three times bigger than Scotland. Motorhome travel in Iceland is the ideal way to get around, because along the way there are so many well hidden natural gems that just demand a stop off.

- It's really cheap. Why spend your money on a expensive hotel and a car when you can use a Camper van or a Motorhome for both?
- The weather in Iceland is as predictable as roulette table and therefore you will want to be mobile and ready to move at any given time. We don't recommend you to have to pack your tent in the rain, and then sit wet in your car for the rest of your day.
- In Iceland there is a law that allows you park your motor home or camper van anywhere for one night. It´s called the law of survival and it also allows you to eat whatever you can put in your mouth (do not forget). You always need permission of the land owner (in most cases the next farmer). The best thing to avoid the problem is to use campsites.
- In a camper van you can go anywhere and do anything you want to do.
- There are 3 persons per square kilometer in Iceland. This allows you to basically disappear into the nature in a motor-home, caravan or camper van.
- In Iceland you won't need to reserve a spot at a camp site . You need simply to show up and enjoy it. Camp sites are very modern and have good facilities.
- All of Iceland's ring road (road no.1) is asphalt which allows you to drive safely around Iceland in any type of camper van.
- In a camper van in Iceland you won't need to plan your trip. You just follow the good weather and enjoy where it takes you.
- In Iceland there are hardly any trees. Therefore you always have an amazing 360° view from a camper at all times.
- With a Camper van you have a kitchen wher-ever you go. This will save you lot´s of cash. Fast food in Iceland is expensive.
DRIVING IN ICELAND
Driving Conditions in Iceland are in many ways unusual and often quite unlike what foreign drivers are accustomed to. It is therefore very important to find out how to drive in this country. We know that the landscapes are beautiful, which naturally draws the driver’s attention away from the road. But in order to reach your destination safely, you must keep your full attention on driving.
-The speed limit in populated areas is usually 50 km/hr.
-The speed limit is often 60 km/hr on thruways, but in residential areas it is usually only 30 km/hr.
-The main rule in rural areas is that gravel roads have a speed limit of 80 km/hr, and paved roads 90 km/hr.
-Signs indicate if other speed limits apply.
Camper rentals in Iceland are a popular choice for travelers looking for the "road trip" experience in Iceland. Renting a camper in Iceland is a great option in Iceland because the country offers unique sites to see in all of its forur corners.
112 Iceland App
The 112 Iceland app can be used for two things, both for added safety on your Iceland trip.
First of all you can call for help by pressing the red Emergency button. Your location will be sent by text message to the 112 response center. Remember that even though your phone shows no signal there is a possibilite that you can send text message.
The green Check In button is for you to leave your location with us so if something happens we have more information to work with. Only the 5 last locations are stored and we recommend you use this – don’t worry – you are not disturbing anyone – except for our big computer who wants to be disturbed.

Peter, Iceland24
I recently visited Iceland this October and rented a camper van from Campervan Iceland (www.campervaniceland.com). The staff was very friendly and helpful when preparing to head out on my trip. Before I left, I had seen a few pictures of the campers but wasn't fully sure what to expect.
ReplyDeleteI was pleasantly surprised. It was more spacious than I expected and had everything that my friend and I needed. I went towards the winter so it handled snow and rocky conditions very well, not that you will need to worry about snow though! I was also worried about having enough time to travel the island with the time I had. I did a little extra driving a few days but was able to see quite a lot at a leisurely pace in about 4 days. I am sure that I could have seen more but was very satisfied with my travels.
Renting from Campervan Iceland was a great decision because it allowed me to travel at my own pace and really experience the country. It really made the trip worth it and I am sure you will have a similar experience. Enjoy your travels.
Hello! Im looking to rent a camper come Sept.
DeleteI would just like to know how you went about getting cleaned daily.
Eg
1.Daily showers
2. Are there frequent toilet stops
3. Are there stops along the way that you can top up your water tank?
Hope to hear back :)
Hi!
Delete1. I recommend you public swimming pools
2. Yes, restaurants, gas stations and swimming pools.
3. Yes. You can also just take water from icelandic rivers, they are so clean!
where can i find a list of campsites open in winter now that you cant park campervans anywhere? also how strict is this law?... i dont plan on messing anything up and have 4 out of 8 nights booked for hotels on ring road...
DeleteHallo!
DeleteIt is indeed strict, it's a matter of preserving Iceland's nature and also your own safety.
You can find campsites at:
http://tjalda.is/en/camping-sites/open-all-year/
Bless bless!
Hi, I am wondering where I can park my campervan during winter (mid Dec) for the nights. All camp sites will be closed. Appreciate your response.
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteThere is a law that allows you to park everywhere you want in Iceland, so I recommend you to park everywhere you like!
Hi, thank you
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeletethinking of coming in October, when the campsites are mostly closed.
I know you can park anywhere, but what about water, and toilets if the camper hasn't any?
You can get water on every gas station ;)
ReplyDeletehow about toilet can i pee or shit anywhere i like too?
DeleteIt is better in gas stations or campings. You can pee everywhere but it is not good for the nature ;)
Deleteplease don't leave paper or other trash when you pee in nature.
DeleteHi!
ReplyDeletedoes anyone knows how easy is to find places to dump sewage /grey waters from a motorhome?
Are petrol stations usually equipped? and what a bout prices?
in europe many petrol stations have that service, so you don't need to go to camp sites, but I am not sure if it is the same in iceland.
thanks
You can do this in gas stations and also campings...
ReplyDeletethanks david
ReplyDeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteI was hoping to find out how easy it is to find places to shower come mid September? I'm a female travelling ring road for two weeks in a camper van!
Can I stop in at hostels? And use their facilities , I think I read that somewhere, is this easy to come by. I understand I'll be slightly roughing it, but would be nice to get a shower and make a blow dry in there the odd time lol any info is greatly appreciated
I was wondering the same thing. Can you please let me know if you were able to use any facilities along the way?
DeleteYou will get 60% open
DeleteHI, in October when most parks are closed, may I know how to keep the campervan warm during nighttime and without a plug in? I don't think the spare battery could make the heater run long enough during night time? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou will be fine if the camper van has WEBASTO inside
ReplyDeleteHi there, will be visiting in August. Assuming campervan or similar kind cannot be used on F35? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteno sorry, you need a 4x4 camper
DeleteHi, My husband and I will be in iceland (south west/south/reykavik areas) for 15 days in February 2016 and really want to hire a camper-van but am not sure if it is very safe? i read some comments on another blog from people who say they live in Iceland that said they would never stay in a campervan or they would stay in hostels half the time..........
ReplyDeleteis it safe enough in Winter (february)?? thank you for your feedback.
yes!
DeleteHello! It is safe since all vehicles have winter tires. Visiting Iceland with a camper is a great experience!
ReplyDeleteHi! My friend and I are planning a 10-day trip to Iceland in September. We want to do some scuba diving and will be traveling with bulky scuba gear, in addition to the rest of our travel gear.
ReplyDeleteWould a 2-person camper van have sufficient storage space?
Yes!
DeleteWe are a family of seven. Do you know of any motorhome camper vans for 7 passenegers. The younger kids could share a bed if needed.
ReplyDeleteHello! I know Motorhome Iceland has a Camper for 8 passengers but only with sleeping room for 6... Contact them!
DeleteHi, we are thinking of renting a campervan for road trip in November/December. Is it a good idea to do this in Winter? How's the road condition and camp facilities (are they even open)?
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Hello! Most of campings are close but you will be able to park and sleep everywhere you want :)
Deletedo you have to pay for campsite/ power?
ReplyDeleteyes
DeleteHi, me and my friends are planning to visit Iceland on coming May. But we heard that is not recommended to rent campervans during April due to unpredictable weather. So can anybody tell me, will the weather affect us if we arrive Iceland on beginning of May? Is it recommended to rent campervans? Will there be alot of campsites available during that period?
ReplyDeleteHello, most of the campsites will be close in May but you will be able to find enough of them ;) May is my favorite month since we use to have a lot of sunny days, do not worry :)
DeleteHi there! I don't understand some of the prices where the dot is present, example it says 1.66 usd. Does that mean $166.00 or $1.66?
ReplyDeleteHello! It is $166 :)
DeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteWe plan to visit Iceland on March 2017 and our trip will be around south west/south/reykjavik areas. Could you please suggest us if it necessary to use 4WD Camper Car.
Yes! I recommend you a 4x4 Camper, no doubts
DeleteHi, we are renting a campervan for 10 days in mid-June. We would like to book the campsites prior to our trip. Kindly send me a link which would have a description of each site. Do most campsites also have plug in/out systems?
ReplyDeleteYes, check here: http://tjalda.is/en/camping-sites/
DeleteWhat is WEBASTO?
ReplyDeleteIt is automatic heating system ;)
DeleteHi, I am planning to rent a campervan in october/november this year. I read from other forum that it is not legal to park a campervan outside of camping ground. ( to stay over night )...so I am concerning maybe I should do car/hostel instead..any advise?
ReplyDeleteHello! It is legal to park outside during winter time. But we have a huge controversy right now in Iceland. Because tourism is growing, it has been much debate about where to park campers. The number of vehicles is growing and tourists often do not respect private property or leave trash in nature. My advice: book a camper and try to park in legal areas (campings, parkings,...)
DeleteHey David, thanks for this! I was just wondering what your thoughts are on camperrentaliceland.com. I haven't seen a review for it anywhere else but I'm getting a good deal...is it a reputable firm?
ReplyDeleteHello! Yes, I have received comments from readers and they seem to be a good company. No worries ;)
DeleteHey David, Thanks for putting this together :). I am planning to visit Iceland in September and thinking of renting motorhome for 6, I have read so many bad reviews about almost every company online about being charged for nominal scratches even after buying full insurance. Can you suggest me a suitable rental company?
ReplyDeleteI am considering http://www.campervaniceland.com/ , http://www.goiceland.com/, http://www.motorhomeiceland.com/ ?
Any advice will be really helpful. Thanks Again. :)
Hey! We hate to give recommendations about companies... Just trying to keep ourselves as neutral as possible. Anyway, I can talk many readers had wrote us about Campervan Iceland (www.campervaniceland.com). They seem to be a good company...
DeleteHi we are off to Iceland next week..cant wait! we are travelling south iceland can you recommend any nice campsites for an RV that would have electricity and water please? and any to avoid?we are travelling Pingvellir, the doing the loop to sellfoss, with a final destination of Jokulsarton. hope you can help David! Best Grazyna
ReplyDeleteHey! i am sending you a list of campings tjalda.is/en/camping-sites/
ReplyDeleteHi, we plan to visit Iceland in the first 2 weeks of September. Getting a good deal on a camper van that has no heating. Would you recommend a camper van without heating, given that we will be spending around 14 nights sleeping in the van?
ReplyDeleteHi! It is very strange since I know 95% of the camper companies have heating inside (webasto heating system). I would recommend you to hire a camper with heating :)
DeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteWe just planned a very last minute trip to Iceland. We would like to do the ring road tour in a campervan or motorhome as even with their high prices it seems cheaper than renting a hotel for 10 days and a rental car to drive around. Does anyone know of any motorhomes or campervans that may still be available? I have been looking but at this poin tthey are few and far between! Thank you!
I recommend you check the list of companies ;)
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeletemy friends and I will come to iceland next month...we are planning to rent motorhome and after search some info regarding the attraction.I found out that most of the attraction sites are out of road ring.is it safe to drive out off road ring using motorhome?
thank you
Yes, you will be able to see all most of the attractions ;)
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteMy friends and I will come to iceland at the end of july till early august. we are planning to rent a motorhome for our trip. When i read some info about the attraction sites in iceland, i found out that lot of them are out of the ring road. is it safe to travel out of ring road by motorhome?
100% yes
DeleteHello has anyone taken a caravan to Iceland not as cool as a campervan but its what we have. Any experience would be helpful such as are they accepted on camp sites i wouldn't think of setting up just anywhere
ReplyDeleteI don't understand your question sorry
DeleteHello David, great post, thanks for this!! I am planning on visiting Iceland from Canada in mid march for about 8-10 days and i have a couple questions. P.S. I will either be doing this trip solo or with a couple people, i have not decided yet. I would really like to do it solo if possible.
ReplyDelete1, Since the campsites will be closed - are their facilities open? If not where can i shower and use the washroom?
2, I am really travelling on a budget so can you recommend a site to get the cheapest automatic 4X4 camper from? And how far in advance should i book it?
3, Will i be safe sleeping in a camper in Mid March? From what i understand, the weather is pretty crazy and unpredictable. Will i be safe at night sleeping in the camper in March weather?
4, How much roughly do you think gas will cost? i have been looking everywhere couldnt find anything definitive. I will be driving the ring road and taking some detours too so lets just say about 2000km's in one of those campers. I just need to know how much to budget.
5, I read a post somewhere that said its cheap to get a sim card from Vodafone and get data on it to use on my unlocked phone while i am there. Is this true? And if so can you recommend the company with the best prices if Vodafone is not? Would really love to have data on my phone for the trip. And do i do this when i get to Iceland or call and book it ahead? Sorry, i dont know how it works.
6, If you have any tips on an itinerary, must-sees or any hidden gems please let me know
Thank you SO MUCH in advance, i understand i have quite a few questions but your help is really appreciated.
Hi Paul,
Delete1. Yes, most of them yes.
2. We don't recommend companies, just check our article you will find a good amount of them :)
3. You will be 100% safe. Just choose the right place to sleep
4. I would say 300-400 USD
5. I recommend you the company NOVA, it is the cheaper in Iceland
6. I also recommend you to check our winter itineraries... there are a few examples in our blog
David
Hey, i made the last post that had about 6 questions, just wanted to clarify something. I made a mistake - I will actually be travelling in the end of February. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteok ;)
DeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteWe are a group of 4, planning to visit Iceland this November. We plan to rent a motor home, but concerned whether it is safe to drive a motor home in winter? Heard in other forums that driving a motor home in winter is a challange. You have answered the safety of winter driving earlier, but it was with respect to a camper van. Would driving a motor home be safe in November? Would a camper van be a better choice with respect to safety? Your advice is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Ravi
Hello, I recommend you a Motorhome for 4 persons no bigger than that since it is really dangerous. You must check the weather report everyday and stop if you see bad conditions or wind...
DeleteHi, We are getting a 4x4 but thinking about upgrading to 4x4 Camper. Camper is obviously more money, 78800 ISK more. Would having 4x4 camper make much better difference than just get 4x4 and buy a tent for 5000 ISK? I am really conflicted here to make decision... Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOf course a 4x4 Camper is more confortable... It is faster to set everything and sleep... It is a matter of money I guess....
DeleteThank you so much for your advice!
DeleteHi, for a motorhome rental in october, do you recommend any insurance other than the cdw included one? (Like super package, etc). Thank you! Eve
ReplyDeleteHello! I recommend you Premium Package ;)
DeleteHi David ! Thanks for taking the time ! We plan to go to Iceland and do the hole tour from 20th of sept and 10th of october.
ReplyDelete1- Do you know if every gas station has diesel ?
2- Did you ever heard of a camper or motor home turned over during the night because of wind ?
3- Do you know if every gas station has the grey water recuperation service in those dates ?
4 - Do you recommend us to rent a motorhome/camper in that time of the year ?
Thank you so much !
Hello!
Delete1. Yes
2. Yes, just park in campings. They are fine with winds ;)
3. Not every but many
4. Yes
;)
Hi, we are planning to visit Iceland by first two weeks of September with 2 young kids. We are doing ring road for 10 days and could you let me know the ff:
ReplyDelete1.) How is the weather in Iceland during our visit from 05-15 September?
2.) Do you think, I need to booked in advance our accommodation? I am just worried if we will not be able to reach on time due to unexpected things can happen like due to weather as most hotels or guest house charges a cancellation fee.
Thank you and your advice is greatly appreciated.
Hello,
Delete1. Just be prepare for everything... You will have sunny days but you could also have strong winds and snow.
2. Yes, book in advance
David
Hy, i wonder that in the middle of october between 12-16th do we have tha chance to see the northern lights? When do u see it usually? I know u gotta have clear weather and all to see it. I also plan to have a campervan, so 60% of the campings will be opened cos we need a place to have shower and toilette and chage stuffs and all. What is the average temperature in october? Thnaks David
ReplyDeleteHello Dóra! Thanks for your message. Yes, you will see northern lights ) Average temperature is 3-5 ºC, do not worry there are enough campings and also you will be able to take shower and bath in local swimming pools
DeleteHi David -
ReplyDeleteFirst off, thank you for taking the time to answer everyone's questions! Your blog is very informative and helpful.
My husband and I will be visiting Iceland at the end of June to early July. We are renting a mini-camper and touring Ring Road. Do we need to make reservations at the campsites during that period?
Thanks again, in advance, for your response!
Vicky
Hello Vicky,
DeleteI am sending you a link where you will be able to see winter campings ;)

Hi David,
ReplyDeleteI understand that you've answered some of my questions, but I am not absolutely clear on the answers.
1. You mentioned that people are trying to change laws regarding where one can park one of these vans. As it stands, they can still be parked anywhere, correct?
2. For bathrooms and showers, if I am going in a couple of weeks (late September), when the camp grounds are closed, what will my options be exactly? Gas stations for bathroom, and what about showers?
Thank you,
Alex
1. Yes
Delete2. I recommend local swimming-pools. They are great and some of them have amazing views!
Hello!
ReplyDeleteI commented on this last night but I'm not sure if it went through (I don't see it on the comments list).
Do you have any experience renting with Camper Rental Iceland? I see that you recommend it but I can't seem to find any information or reviews on it from anyone else.
I really want to try the camper route but will need to rent an automatic and it seems as though Camper Rental Iceland is the only dealer who has one available for next week.
Thanks!
- Lisa
Hello Lisa,
DeleteWe have read comments and it looks they work very well... Good luck and let us know about your experience!
Hi David first of all I applaud you for answering all these questions from people. I'm sure there well appreciate it. I've been doing research for 2 weeks on Iceland I was planning on going the 18th of October this year. I'm trying to do this on a cheap budget cuz I know it's pretty expensive there so I've been debating on a camper van or sleeping in my car or sleeping in a hostel. I would feel more comfortable in the camper van but the ones I've checked out we're all manual and I can only drive automatic so unless you know of a camper van company that deals with automatic that will be out of the question. I don't know about hostels they are still a little pricey and I'm in my fifties I don't know about sharing a room with 15 other people LOL so I was thinking maybe the car but I do not know what year weather is like in October. I will bring a sleeping bag with me but will I still be pretty cold. Anyways any suggestions on this would be great do you even have snow in October I'm only going for 4 days so I'll probably just be doing the ring Circle and maybe along the South part of a bit. I'm testing the waters for next time for when I want to do that ring Circle. Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteHello! I would suggest you to check in www.camperrentaliceland.com, they have automatic campers :)
DeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteI am coming to Iceland with my Jeep on the ferry (brave/stupid I'm not sure yet!) and travelling around the island with that, I have a roof tent (maggiolina airtop if you want to Google it) but concerened about wind. If it is too windy to sleep in it are there plenty of hostels or bnbs around the ring road that I can turn up and use? Or are there plenty of sheltered areas (woodland etc.) I can find?
Thanks in advance.
Alex
Hello, when are you coming?
DeleteHello David,
ReplyDeleteLike people mentioned above, thank you for responding to all the questions. I'm traveling to Iceland solo from Oct 9-17. I've been doing a lot of research but I still cannot decide which way to go. Between renting a car and stopping along Ring Road in different hostels/bed & breakfast or renting a camper van, which option is safe and better? Like I mentioned, I'm a solo traveler for now and I was wondering if it is safe for a girl to rent a camping van by herself?
Also, I'm allergic to cold ( I know, I know! I'm probably coming in at a wrong time) so should that be a concern in a camper? I read some comments about webasto heaters but is it enough for a cold winter in October?
Driving along Ring Road seems like a good idea to cover as many places as I want but there are certain tours (lava & ice caves) etc which will require detouring and adding those in my plans as those are guided tours and I believe they cannot be done solo.
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated! Thank you :)
Hello! It is safe of course to get a camper and drive around Iceland, girl or boy, it doesn't matter. It is more a question of the type of trip you want to do... I would not recommend a camper if you are not cold friendly :)
DeleteThank you so much for taking the time to answer all of these questions! I just discovered this blog and it is WONDERFUL! Our family of 4 including our 8 and 5 year old are planning a trip for 9 days in August of 2017. We would like to spend a day or two in Reykjavik, but the remainder of the trip touring in a motor home. Do you recommend dropping the motor home off and getting a hotel for a night or 2 in Reykjavik, or would it work to park the motorhome on the outskirts of the city?? The latter is preferable, so that we can be flexible. And we have no experience with a motorhome- are they easy enough to figure out? (We thought about a camper van but would like more comfort/ space). Lastly, we are coming at peak season- will the campsites potentially be full? We would like to not book ahead so that we can be flexible with our itinerary.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for all of your help!
Hello! Yes, i recommend you a 2 hotel nights in Reykjavík since it will be easier to access to the city center and you will enjoy having a regular bed ;)
DeleteIt is really easy to drive a Motorhome, do not worry at all! You can buy the camping card ahead at www.campingcard.is
Hello David,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, your blog is amazing! Second, I'm a 25 year old female and I'm planning on going solo to Iceland for 2 weeks in late November/early December, and I intend to rent a camper van. My major concern is not abou the cold but safety.. Is it okay to be parked all night outside in inhabited areas? It windy enough to turn the van around?! I won't be going to the Highlands or anywhere by F roads, just wanted to drive calm along the main road and do some walking along the landscapes.. Thank you!
Hello, yes it is ok since all campers have webasto heating system (be sure your company has campers with it!).
DeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteIt was great reading all the questions and your replies. Hope that my questions aren't too repeated.
1. We were in Iceland back in Sept Oct 2015 and driving then was ok in our KIA Sportage.
2. We are planning to head to iceland again from 23 March to early April 2017 and are contemplating on renting a 4x4 campervan. Will the driving of campervan on the ring road be safe in terms of the strong winds, and the surface area of the campervan?
3. As for nightly campsites, do you have any links or info where we can check if the campsites are open during that time? And are campsite facilities adequate such as basic showering, electrical point for campervan usage, and the charges for using these facilities.
4. Suppose we were to sleep over at somewhere besides a campsite, does the heating system drain out the campervan battery?
Thanks again David!
Chia

Hello Chia!
Delete2. Campervan 4x4 are well equipped with studded tires, you will be able to drive all the way around Iceland.

Hello David, We'are planning to visit Iceland next summer and we've read diferent versions about where to park your camper. Since we want to rent one we'd like to know if it's true that after the change of law in 2015, you can not park everywhere during summer, and if it's so, where can we park, and how much it's? THANK YOU
ReplyDeleteHi! I recommend you to park in campings if you want to avoid problems. Since the tourism industry is growing fast, there are many problems related with this. Just buy the camping card and enjoy our great campings :)
DeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteI am visiting Iceland from 1 - 10 May and I am thinking to experience the country with camper van. Do I need to 4x4 to visit highland such Landmannalaugar ( will the road be closed) and remote area such as westfjord?
Do I need to pre book the camping site?
Appreciate your guidance.
Cheers,
Bryan
Hallo!
DeleteIf you are heading to the highlands you do need a 4x4, they are mandatory in that area.
Some camping sites requires a reservation, others don't, they accept walk-in, so it is better to check with the chosen camping site directly.
Bless!
Hello
ReplyDeleteNot sure if this feed is still open but I have just rented a Motorhome through Campervan Iceland for 22nd April 2017 to 30th April 2017 and have gone for a 6 person Motorhome Exquisite, but am a bit concerned because we were planning on driving around the whole ring road in a loop and travelling around the whole country via the ring road and have a few queries:
1. Will there be campsites open at this time of year that we can plug in to so we can use our onboard facilities (heating, gas cooker, toilet etc)? As we are driving around the whole country we can't afford to be stuck in a region of Iceland that has no campsites if we need to stay overnight.
2. Is it essential to hook up the motorhome to power in order to use these facilities or can they be used without being connected to electricity (without draining the battery and causing a flat battery)?
3. Is it possible/viable to stay overnight in a motorhome outside of a campsite? (By this I mean given the temperature and the need to use the gas cooker etc to cook and the shower)
Many thanks for you help! :)
Luke
1. Yes, there will be campsites open :)
Delete2. Easy!
3. I recommend you to sleep on campsites.
Hope you enjoy your trip!
HI Luke,
DeleteI am traveling to Iceland in May end. I wanted to know your experience with motorhome. We are 6 and we are planning to get a motorhome. Were there any issues with the wind?
Hi David,
ReplyDeleteThanks for amazing review. Need to ask you, are there many roads/terrains in Iceland that would not allow a Motor Home because of its size and rather allow a camper van?
Hallo!
DeleteRoad in Iceland are either for 4x4 only or for any vehicle, regardless of its type.
In F-Roads, only 4x4 (passenger cars, campers...) are allowed.
Bless bless!
Hi, David, two of us are planning for a trip to Iceland this December. I would like to know which vehicle is the most suitable to rent, 4x4 campervan or a motorhome? Will the motorhome too heavy to go around during winter?
ReplyDeleteHallo!
Deleteduring the winter time, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended : )
Hi David,
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your time answering all the questions.
We are also travelling to Iceland in July/August,for about a week. Thinking about a camper. Deciding between snail and happy camper. Any take on that?
Also, do you really need to heat the camper at night in July?
Would you need a camper for the Golden Circle tour or might I be better off, just renting a car for a day and staying in Reykjavik for a day and doing circle and town together before heading out in the wild. Also, is it advisable to get the extra insurance packages in July, such as Ash and Sand, SCDW (what is that anyway) and Gravel protection?
Thank you,
Jules
Hallo!
DeleteWe would like to remain neutral, you can check the comparison on the post and compare it to the mention options, and of course, choose the one that suits you best!
It depends on the weather really, but the campers usully have the heating system included just in case you need it.
If you will only do Reykjavik and the Golden Circle and not visit any other areas in Iceland, then the car rental is probably a better option.

Hi
ReplyDeleteI will travel to Iceland with my wife at early if October 2017
Would like to ask camper van suitable for travel vehicle during snowing period? Is it will difficult to travel?
Thanks
Lee
Hallo!
DeleteYes! campervans are a vehicle that can be driven all year long! they come with heating system so you can stay wartm even in the winter. If you are heading to the north of Iceland, we then recommend a 4x4 one.
Bless bless!
Hello David: I have read thru all the questions and your replies but am still unclear on campground reservations...we will rent a small motorhome for Aug 12-18, 2017, and want to know if the campgrounds may be full during that peak season...do we need to make a more detailed itinerary and campground reservations? We plan to drive the entire Ring Road.
ReplyDeleteHallo!
DeleteDuring the high season it is indeed better to check with the campsites if they require a booking or not as availability can be scarce.
Knowing your campsites options before coming to Iceland are a fantastic idea.

Me and my girlfriend had an awful experience renting a van in ACE CAR RENTAL, we felt completley scammed.
ReplyDeleteI have to begin saying that we had no problem with the car itself. The problem came at the time of returning it. It had suffered a small dent in the driver's door. As they had to take us to the airport and we had no time to go to a repair shop we signed a bond for the value of the excess (1000 €) trusting them when they committed to send us the actual price of the repair (And to look for the cheapest option for us).
But: surprise! Once at home they sent us a budget of 1200 € for the repair. The first thing that draw our attention is that the budget shows that the car is a Volkswagen Caddy and we had rented a Dacia Dokker, but the most surprising thing is that the vehicle's license plate was the same: the document had been obviously manipulated, it was probably the budget of the repair of another car.
We visited several repair shops and they told us that this repair can not exceed 200 €, that changing the door for a new one is cheaper than those 1200€! The budget shows a total of 4 hours and 19 minutes of sheet metal work and repair and 6 hours of painting workshop to which they add among other costs, over 190 € of paint. All that for a 10 centimeters dent. In a workshop we were told that in those hours you can paint a whole side of the car.
A terrible experience, a company we do not recommend at all. Do not let this take you by surprise. Just think that any scratch you make to the car (Something normal in a place like Iceland) will cost you 1000 €. Do yourself a favor, and rent the car somewhere else. You can see the pictures of the dent and the budget below.

Horrible experience! thanks for sharing
DeleteIs there a place to rent a vintage VW camper van? I swear I found a site, and now I cannot find it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi! I think at Campervan Iceland (www.campervaniceland.com) they have the VW California
DeleteHello. I would like to know if you have any information about camperrentaliceland.com? I'm interested in a camper they offer, but I can't find any reviews about them and I was wondering if it's secure to make the deposit.
ReplyDeleteHallo!
DeleteSome have post about this company but we do not know how it works for the deposit.
Please contact them directly : )

Hi David,
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your replies earlier!
May I ask, would I require a camping card when parking my campervan overnight at the camp site? From what I researched, it seems that I will have to pay for shower and electricity as these are not included by the camping card. So I am not sure if I will need to get a camping card to park my campervan.
Hope you can advise us! Thanks!
Hallo!
DeleteThe card only includes parking access but facilities that the campsite does not include in its night rate, are not included.

Hi David,

Hi There,
ReplyDeleteJust wondering if you or you know of someone who has used Campers Reykavik? (https://www.campersreykjavik.com/)
I can't seem to find any reviews of them anywhere and just want to check the legitimacy of the company before booking with them :)
Thanks!
Hallo!
DeleteSome readers left their positive experience on the forum, it seems like they are kind of new.

Thank you so much for this helpful thread!
ReplyDeleteWe are going Oct 1-7 and wanted to get a campervan for Ring Road. I've been reading VERY mixed reviews about the safety of being in a campervan in October particularly the wind factor.
We're from Southern California so we don't plan on going to the highland/F roads and will stick to the main gravel ones.
In your opinion, do you think it's fine to have a regular campervan for the trip? Or even a 4x4 campervan?
And very glad to see that there are some campsites open all year!
Hallo!
DeleteWell, there is a difference between Campervans and motorhomes. The last ones do need to be a winter model. Campervans are usually adapted vans so they are not as tall and big as motorhomes and those are better for the winter time.
a 4x4 is always a great extra to have, although for the ring road it is not mandatory.

Is it safe driving in iceland?
ReplyDeleteHallo!
DeleteIf you follow the rules and check the road conditions, it is : )

Hi I am traveling to Iceland April 26- April 29,
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to find a 4x4 camper for the two of us.
When it comes down to picking either a camper or a 4x4 what should i pick?
Do you have any insights regarding this issue?
THANKYOU!
Hallo!
DeleteIt depends on your route. If you are just doing the Ring Road, no F-Roads (if there are any open by then) then a 2WD camper will do : )

Dear David,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great site. My son and I will be arriving on Thursday morning leaving Sunday late afternoon. If we rent a camper van, will we need to bring sleeping bags, and how warm are these vehicles? Also, would we be able to circumnavigate the island enjoyably in the limited amount of time we have or should we focus on just a few key areas? Thanks for your insights.
Hallo!
DeleteEquipment of vehicles vary depending on each company. I recommend you to contact them directly and inquiry about what is included in the rental price!
These vehicles come with automatic heating system : )
