Welcome to our complete guide to renting a car in Iceland! If you’re planning a trip to this beautiful land of fire and ice, renting a car is an excellent option for exploring its stunning landscapes independently.
In this guide, we’ll provide you with useful tips, information on recommended car types, where to rent them, requirements to consider, necessary insurances, and much more. Get ready to have an unforgettable experience in Iceland with the freedom to explore at your own pace.
Classification of car rental companies in Iceland
When renting a car in Iceland, it’s important to consider, in addition to price, the reputation and reviews of rental companies. Below, we present a ranking based on customer satisfaction, quality of service, and of course, price:
Cars Iceland – 🏆🏆🏆
Upon further investigation into Cars Iceland, we found excellent reviews for their customer service. We’ve also seen that it’s one of the companies that offers more comprehensive options in terms of insurance. They have a varied fleet to cover all needs with fairly new and modern cars.
IslandiaCar / Reykjavík Cars 🏆🏆
And now you might wonder why we’ve placed IslandiaCar and Reykjavík Cars on the same podium. Well, in the midst of our research, we discovered that IslandiaCar is the Spanish-language subsidiary of Reykjavík Cars. So if you’re intimidated by English (many of you have told me on the blog), I bring you good news: their agents will assist you in Spanish!
As you can see, both offer the same price and conditions. So if you’re scared of Shakespeare’s language, now you know where to turn using Cervantes’.
Reykjavík Auto 🏆
A younger company than the previous ones, but with a solid reputation and a fleet of modern vehicles, Reykjavík Auto is a reliable option for renting a car in Iceland at a good price and with good conditions. Their cars include CDW, SCDW, and TP insurances in the price, which we’ll tell you more about later.
Comparison of companies and prices
Next, we offer you a comparison of some car rental companies in Iceland, along with the approximate prices you can expect to find. Remember that prices may vary depending on the season and availability, so it’s advisable to check updated prices when making your reservation.
When conducting this study on renting a car in Iceland, we opted for local companies. There are many companies, so we’ve chosen the seven most well-known. The calculation is based on a hypothetical rental in July for 9 days (July 11-19, 2023). Which is already the high season in Iceland.
The type of car we’ve chosen for all is a 5-seat 2WD sedan. The study is for cars to be picked up at Keflavík airport.
Comparison Table of Car Rental Companies in Iceland:
Company | Approximate price per day (in ISK) |
---|---|
Cars Iceland | 12,393 ISK | €82 |
IslandiaCar | 11,466 ISK | €75 |
Reykjavík Cars | 11,466 ISK | €75 |
Reykjavík Auto | 11,817 ISK | €78 |
Blue Car Rental | 13,286 ISK | €92 |
Go Car Rental | 13,932 ISK | €92.30 |
Nordic Car Rental | 12,672 ISK | €83 |
Before renting a vehicle, you should have a clear plan of your trip and needs; you’ll typically need 7 to 10 days to tour all of Iceland, which means you’ll spend a lot of time in the car, so it’s an important decision.
Don’t worry, this article will clarify all your doubts about renting a car in Iceland. So, what’s the best car rental company in Iceland? Where can we rent a cheap car in Iceland without compromising safety?
Where to rent a car in Iceland?
If you’re looking for options to rent a car in Iceland, there are two main centers where you can find numerous rental companies: Keflavik and Reykjavik.
- In Keflavik, where Keflavik International Airport is located, you’ll find a wide selection of car rental companies. Many of them offer pick-up and drop-off services directly at the airport, which is convenient for those who want to start their adventure immediately.
- In Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, there are also several car rental options. Here you’ll find both international and local companies offering a wide range of vehicles to suit your needs.
What car should you rent in Iceland?
Renting a car in Iceland can be an unforgettable experience. The main advantage is “freedom”, as with a rental car, you can stop and see everything you want during your trip around Iceland. As an alternative to the car, there’s the bus, but in Iceland, there isn’t a good public transportation network (it’s very scarce and expensive), so we don’t recommend it.
But to make your trip truly unforgettable, you must know how to choose the right car for your adventure. It’s important then to consider various factors, such as your route and the season in which you’re traveling.
Car according to your route
Your choice when renting a car in Iceland will largely depend on the route you plan to take in Iceland. If your itinerary focuses mainly on the famous Ring Road, also known as the Ring Road, a standard two-wheel-drive (2WD) car will be sufficient. These cars are suitable for paved roads and will allow you to visit the main points of interest.
However, if you intend to explore the Highlands of Iceland or venture onto gravel roads or the famous Icelandic F roads, we recommend considering a four-wheel-drive (4WD) car. These vehicles offer greater stability and traction on more challenging terrains, giving you the possibility to access remote areas away from traditional tourist routes.
Car According to the Season
Preferences when renting a car in Iceland are also greatly influenced by the season in which you plan to visit the country. During the winter months, especially from November to March, it’s important to consider the weather conditions and possible inclement weather.
In this case, a four-wheel-drive (4WD) car equipped with winter tires will be the best option. These tires provide better grip on slippery surfaces and will help you navigate snowy or icy roads more safely.
Remember to adapt your choice of car to your itinerary and expected weather conditions for a safe and enjoyable driving experience in Iceland.
Things to consider in your rental
When renting a car in Iceland, there are several important aspects to consider to ensure a seamless experience. Below, we provide relevant information about requirements, insurances, extras, gas stations, parking, and roads and speed limits in Iceland.
Requirements for renting a car
When renting a car in Iceland, you must meet certain requirements. Here’s a list of points to consider:
- You must be over 21 years old to rent a car in Iceland. Some companies may require a minimum age of 23 or 25 depending on the model or type of car you choose.
- A valid and current driving license is required. If you have a Spanish driving license, you shouldn’t have any problems renting a car in Iceland, nor will you need an international permit. Remember that you must have at least one year of driving experience; novice drivers cannot rent cars in Iceland.
- Some companies may require a valid credit card to rent the vehicle in the name of the main driver for the security deposit. Make sure you have a credit card available with a sufficient limit to cover the deposit. If you don’t have a credit card, some companies accept the option of a debit card plus extra insurance.
Car Insurances
It’s essential to understand the different types of car insurance offered when renting in Iceland. Here are some common terms related to insurances:
- CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): This is basic accident insurance that limits your financial liability in case of damage to the rented vehicle. Note that there’s usually a deductible you must pay in case of damage.
- SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver): This is an additional option to further reduce your financial liability in case of vehicle damage. With this insurance, the deductible from the previous CDW is reduced, depending on the company, sometimes even halved.
- GP (Gravel Protection): This insurance covers damages caused by stones and gravel that may jump and damage the windshield, bodywork, or other parts of the car.
- TP (Theft Protection): Provides coverage in case of theft or attempted theft of the vehicle. In Iceland, it’s not really necessary, but it doesn’t hurt.
- SAAP (Sand and Ash Protection): This insurance covers you in case of damage caused by sandstorms and volcanic ash, which, although it sounds like a movie, are quite common in Iceland.
- Premium insurance package: Some rental companies offer a package that combines several insurances into one, providing you with more comprehensive coverage and reducing your liability in case of damage or theft. Many of the companies we researched even offered insurance without a deductible, a highly recommended option when renting a car in Iceland.
Needless to say, it’s important to carefully read the terms and conditions of the insurances offered by each rental company before making a decision.
Extras
When renting a car in Iceland, you can add optional extras to enhance your travel experience. Some common extras include:
- GPS: If you don’t have a navigation device, you can rent a GPS to help you navigate Icelandic roads.
- Baby seats: If you’re traveling to Iceland with young children, you can rent baby seats to ensure their safety and comfort during the journey. If you prefer to bring your own, here’s the guide on baby car seats in Iceland.
- Roof racks: If you need additional luggage space, you can opt for a roof rack or roof box.
- Additional driver: If you plan to share driving duties, you can add an additional driver to the rental agreement. This allows you to alternate driving shifts and rest during long journeys.
- Winter tires: If you’re traveling to Iceland in winter, these tires are necessary to ensure better traction and safety in slippery road conditions. Most companies we consulted include them by default, but it’s always best to check if the company you’ve chosen also does.
- Portable Wi-Fi: Some rental companies offer the option to rent a portable Wi-Fi device, allowing you to stay connected to the internet while on the move in Iceland.
Tips for Driving in Iceland
Driving in Iceland can be an exciting and unique experience, but it’s also important to consider some driving tips and rules. Here are some key points to consider:
Respect speed limits and traffic signs
Iceland has speed limits set on roads, which vary depending on the type of road and conditions. It’s essential to respect the speed limits in Iceland and pay attention to traffic signs to ensure your safety and avoid fines.
Drive with caution
It’s basic to understand that driving in Iceland is a unique experience and different from your country. Weather conditions in Iceland can change rapidly, especially during the winter months. Always check the status of roads before heading out on your route.
Responsible parking
When parking your car, make sure to do so in designated areas and follow local regulations. Avoid blocking access, roads, or protected natural areas. If you plan to hike or explore remote areas, make sure to park in safe locations and don’t obstruct the passage of other vehicles.
Plan stops at gas stations
Iceland is a vast country, and some remote areas may have a shortage of gas stations. It’s important to plan your stops and ensure you have enough fuel for your journey. Take advantage of opportunities to fill up the tank when you find a gas station and carry cash or credit cards, as not all gas stations in Iceland accept cash payments.
Respect nature and the environment
Iceland is known for its natural beauty and fragile environment. Make sure to respect nature and follow established guidelines. Don’t stray from marked paths or trails, avoid trespassing in restricted areas, and don’t damage local flora and fauna. Enjoy nature responsibly and sustainably.
Conclusion
Renting a car in Iceland opens up a world of possibilities for exploring this breathtaking country at your own pace. Whether you’re planning a road trip along the Ring Road, an adventure into the Highlands, or a winter excursion to witness the Northern Lights, having your own wheels gives you the freedom to create unforgettable memories.
Remember to choose a reputable car rental company that meets your needs, consider the type of car and insurance options carefully, and familiarize yourself with driving rules and conditions in Iceland. With proper preparation and a spirit of adventure, your Icelandic road trip is sure to be an experience you’ll never forget.
Safe travels and enjoy your journey through the land of fire and ice!

Just returned from a 10 day trip from Iceland and rented a car from Cars Iceland (http://www.carsiceland.com).
I was quite happy with their service as they dropped off the car to our hotel for no extra charge and made arrangements to pick up from the airport also.
The communication was great as they were able to e-mail details back and forth as needed.
I checked many different sites and Cars Iceland had the best pricing. I would surely rent from them again!!!!!

Thank you so much for posting this. I am going in June and was thankful you posted the website you used.

good to know 🙂

How much do you think I will spend for five days? Rental and gas included if I go in December.
24
Hi! It depends how much you want to drive… I would say 200 USD and 250 USD = 450$

Great blog! We will be heading there in 3 months so this is very helpful. Thank you!

Do we need to get an IDP form if we are driving in Iceland?
24
Not at all!
Kayla
Is there any age restrictions for car rentals in Iceland? I know in US you have to be at least 24. Friends and I are going to Iceland in April, we will all be 23. Will this be an issue?
Nicola
Hello,
I am also going in April and I am 23. Did you manage to hire one??
24
It is totally fine!
24
It is fine if you are 23 😉
Unknown
Hi, do we actually need to buy the extras like sand and ash protection, or even gravel protection? We'll probably get the CDW, but not too sure how strict the car rental companies are on minor damages by the elements.
Johanna
Hallo!
Minor damages are still damages. So the most covered, the better!
bless!

I am going to Iceland in January and am hoping to drive from Reykjavik to Vik and through the Golden Circle. Is a 4×4 needed to drive through that area? I am from an area that has mild to harsh winters so I have experience driving in icy/snowy conditions.
24
I would recommend you to hire a 4×4 since it is safer during winter time… You don't need it but it is better.
Unknown
So if we'll be driving along the lower west and southern coast in mid-May (first up to Snaefellsnes and then out to Jokulsarlon) would you still recommend a 4×4? It seems like it may not be necessary for this route at that time of year. Thanks!
Unknown

24
It is not necessary, you will be fine with a 2wd and most of the car rental agencies offer free winter tires so it should be fine. We (icelanders) always recommend 4×4 vehicles during winter time :=)
Menina Azul Reciclada
Hi David,
Going about the same subject: what about renting a car for a trip to take place in the end of March this year? Would you still recommend a 4×4? We are only planning to do the Golden Circle and the Ring to Jokulsarlon and back. Thanks in advanced for any tip.
24
I would rent a 4×4… But you don't need it, it is just more secure to drive over icy roads with a 4wd!
Unknown
We are also going n January to stay in Vik. How far away is it from Reykjavik and is there public transport that would take us there from the airport? I am debating hiring a car but very nervous about driving out there!
24
I would recommend you to hire a car since it could be easier… The bus company is http://www.straeto.is/

Hello! This is so helpful in planning my trip to Iceland this fall. One question…do some of these car rental companies offer cars with automatic transmission? I ran into a problem with that in Germany…neither my travel partner nor I can drive manual. Thanks!
24
All of these car rentals offer automatic cars 🙂

Hello. In mid January we are planning on staying at the Hotel Budir on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. We are planning on hiring a vehicle. Will we require a 4×4 to get from Reykjavik to the peninsula? Is the route paved all the way? Thank you
24
Hello! The road is fine, you don't need a 4×4 BUT we always recommend a 4wd vehicle since you can expect everything here in Iceland!
Unknown
HI
I will be driving around the ring road in early april over 6 full days. i guess i will go off the main hwy a little but nothing crazy thats too offroad. do you think i need a 4×4 ?
24
I would recommend you a 4×4,
will you be driving south or north?

My partner and I are heading to Iceland in September, I know you said it's not necessary to buy the insurance add-on's but I've read a couple reviews about being charged for scratches caused by gravel. Does this happen often? In this case would you say it would be more wise to get the insurance?
24
Hello Melissa! Iceland is special in all sense since everything can happen.
Some parts of the road has plenty of little rocks and these rocks can be a potencial danger for windows or scratches. Insurance is like a lottery in Iceland…
Lucas CM
hello and congrats for the very complete website. my and my (currently) girlfriend will spend our honeymoon in iceland from april 26 to may 12. we have basically two doubts:
(1) is it worthy to do the complete ring road or given that it is still not summer it'd be more efficient to focus between jokulsarlon and westfjords?
(2) depending on the answer of the first question, is it worthy to get a 4×4? we like to go a little of the beaten path but not that much… and when people say 4×4 do they usually mean and 4 wheel drive or it should be a SUV (like a suzuki vitara for instance)?
thanks in advance!
24
1. Yes, 100% you should make the ring road
2. I will get a cheap 4×4, BUT you don't need a 4×4 in late april -may…
Arjun
Hi,
I am planning a trip to Iceland this April 2016. Can someone suggest me a person who can be our driver as well as a guide for us. I unfortunately do not know driving but very keen on making to Iceland. Would really be grateful to you all if someone gives a helping hand here. 🙂
24
What about traveling by bus?
AB
Hi
I will be in Iceland in a weeks time for a few days. I plan to see Reykjavik, golden circle and krator and staying in Hafnarfjörður. As these are very touristy areas I presume roads/weather would be suitable for me to rent a small car (without the need for a 4×4)?
Thanks in advance 🙂
24
Hello, it is fine with a regular car but as I said, it is more secure if you hire a 4×4… A small one at least
Unknown
In March our family of five (three teens) will be staying over for one night. With so many people and so little time renting a car sounds like the way to go…yes? Also, where should we stay and what should we see in that time?
Thank you!
24
I would recommend you to check the Blue Lagoon and sleep one night in Reykjavík
Unknown
Hey me and my partner are visiting iceland for a road trip at the end of April. Car Rental reviews online for Iceland are quite worrying. No one seems to have very good feedback from previous users. Is there anyone you could recommend.
We will mostly be taking the ring road down to Vik but then heading north to the Golden Circle. Will roads off the ring road all be dirt tracks and involve river crossings?
Thanks
24
We don't like to recommend companies since we try to just be "in the middle". Check reviews, prices and hope you will find the best car rental 🙂
Unknown
Need a one way car rentals from Keflavik to Seyðisfjörður to catch a ferry to Denmark.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Difficult and expensive I guess…

Hey David, Thank you so much for all the reply first of all, they are really helpful.
We are 8 friends traveling from 13May to 23May. We are confused between getting a van (9 Passenger, may be 2WD) or getting two medium size SUVs (4X4)s.
We are doing the full circle of Iceland, including North. Comparing to smaller sedans, SUVs would be more safer, but will a Huge van be fine ?
I really appreciate your reply
Thanks
24
Hey! I would say it is better if you take 1 vehicle… You will save a lot in gas and you will be fine in a car like Renault Trafic… Good luck!
Rebecca
We have been to Iceland before, in March and then we were very happy to drive a 4×4. This time we plan a trip at the end of September/first week of October. We will be driving from Keflavik to Siglufjurdur and Myvatn area and fly back by domestic flight. We prefer a 4×4, but the prices for a one way drive are very high (+150.000-170.000ISK), because only the big companies offer this. So now we are considering a regular car (like a Volkswagen Golf). Would that be enough for the trip we want to do?
24
I would say it is enough but you never know about the weather conditions here in Iceland… Try to book with a local company a small SUV, I am sure you will find something cheap 🙂
Leila
I am traveling with 2 friends in mid-April 2016. We plan to drive to kirkjufell and the Snaefellsnes peninsula, then down to Vik and over to Jokulsarlon. I know you have essentially told everyone to get a 4×4 since the weather is unpredictable but is that still true in April? Is that true year-round? What kind of car do you mean when you say a "small 4×4"? Obviously, with 3, we don't really need a big SUV or car. Also, is it useful to get the rental car GPS?
24
Hi! You don't need a 4×4 but we always recommend to have one if you want extra security 🙂
I would recommend you to talk with the car rental companies, they will guide you better than me. My personal opinion is to rent a 4×4 if you are traveling around Iceland from October to April…
Raju
We are a group of 10 people travelling to Iceland from 28th May afternoon to 3rd June morning.
What will be the best way to travel? As I understand from your blog, the best will be to hire one vehicle. Do we get a minivan/ coach for 10 pax along with the driver as usually we have driven cars. Do we need 4X4. Any other suggestions from your side.
24
Hi! I would recommend you to hire 2 SUVs like Dacia Duster 4×4 since there are no vehicles for 10 persons in Iceland (if you just have the regular driving license)
Raju
Thanks for your advice.
We are planning to cover south and west coast area.
We are planning to book 2 4X4 vehicles like Toyota RAV 4/ Suzuki Vitara Automatic from the airport (Could not fine Dacia Duster – Automatic). Do we need 4WD for these areas or FWD is ok if we do not get 4WD?
What insurance should we ask for as there are many different types of insurances have been mentioned. From your blog what I understand CDW which they all have is sufficient. Ian trying to check with my Visa credit card if they offer SCDW waiver.
Any suggestions from your side?
How to get the best car rental deals and also accomodation in Iceland?
Daily we have kept approx 250-300 kms of travel – Will it be managable?
Out of 10, 4 of us will be driving but in India we have steering on right side and we drive on left side of the road as opposed to european countries – Do you feel that can be managed? We are regular drivers in our country.
We are planning to book diesel vehicles from mileage point of view. Is that fine or you feel there should not be much difference in Petrol/ Diesel.
Thanks for your help.
Regards.
Raju

Wow! So Many questions!
I would suggest you to write us in our forum at: http://icelandtravelforum.com
Lucas CM
hi, thanks for the advice!
an opel mokka would qualify as a proper 4×4 to venture into the westfjords in early may or it just looks like a bigger car but is as useless as a regular one?
regards
24
I would choose a bigger 4×4… like Dacia Duster for example… Mokka is a very little 4×4 with almost nothing luggage space.
Kimberly
Hello – I'm travelling in July and have 8 days, 7 nights. If I want to drive the ring road, would you recommend booking it all on my own, or should I go through a travel group? If a travel group, who would you recommend?
24
I would recommend on your own 100%
Lucas CM
david, thanks again for the reply about the mokka.
luggage space is not our main concern, as it'll be only me and my wife traveling. worst case scenario we use the back seats as luggage space. my main worry is not being able to reach picturesque spots (in the westfjords for instance). a duster is +- twice the price we're paying for the mokka. do you think it'll be worthwhile?
regards
24
I will choose Duster or Qashqai if you want to visit Askja or Landmannalaugar…
Unknown
Hello, I'm travelling in 19 March to iceland. is it recommend for us to do ring road trip?
24
Yes of course! Be sure you hire a 4×4 🙂
Unknown
Hi, I'm travelling in 1 May to Iceland with my partner. We are planning to drive from Reykjavik to Jokulsarlon. Do we need small SUV or 4X4? We are looking at Suzuki Jimmy. Is it recommended?
24
It is enough with a regular vehicle
I personally don't like the Jimmy, it is very small…
Unknown
Hi, someone also recommended me the Jimny. I don't mind a small car, as it's only me and my husband. But is it good enough to drive f-roads like the f35 for example?
Melissa Jo
I'm traveling solo july 25-30 before heading out on a trek. I'd like to cover the south/south west as well as the snaefellsnes peninsula. It seemed too short of a time to cover the entire ring. Would you recommend a 4×4 or is a regular vehicle ok? And is it better to go solo versus with a travel group?
24
It is fine with a regular vehicle Melissa
AK
HI David,
Thanks a lot for the info! Helps a lot 🙂
We (I and my partner) are traveling to Iceland on July 2nd to July 13th. We are mostly going to do the ring road, no F roads. I know you recommend a 4×4 – I can go for that – my main concern is which car company to choose. Any recommendations?
24
Hello, it will be fine with a regular vehicle. You don't need a 4×4 unless you will drive on F-Roads
Karen
Hello David,
Thank you for all the great advice! Much appreciated! I know that you have commented on rental cars often…and I understand that you suggest travelers to rent a 4×4 vehicle. However, over my short stay from April 9th-15th, I will only be using the vehicle to drive from the airport to Reykjavik, then Reykjavik to Glacier Lagoon and back. Of course, we will do one day traveling the Golden Circle. The difference in cost of renting a 4WD vs a 2WD vehicle is pretty significant. Is this route doable safely in a 2WD? Thanks so much for answering another rental car questions!
24
If you are driving only these places you don't need a 4×4 😉
Just get a 2WD. Thanks for reading our blog!
Unknown
hi David!
My sister and I will be driving in Jun this year. We are going to Hella and then all along the west coast up to Akureyri and Mvytan (i think i spelled that wrong). For the most part staying on hwy 1 but will drive off it a little bit also. 4×4 recommended? Also, if you have any suggestions on must see places i would love to hear about them!
Thank you so much for your help!!
24
Hi! I would recommend you a 4×4 only if you are planning to drive on F-Roads…
Unknown
I am going to Iceland this coming May. I am 22 years old and going to be driving the ring road. Am I old enough to rent a 2W and will a 2w be fine for driving that?
24
You are fine, you can rent a 2WD and a 4WD in Iceland under this age 🙂
Vijay
Hello David,
Thanks for all the replies. I'm planning on taking a 2 day tour to Jokulsarlon but plan on staying there an extra night in early April . Is it wise to rent a car from Jokulsarlon or take bus? Do I need a 4×4 or 2wd will be enough?
24
I personally don't like buses in Iceland, they are not confortable and I believe it is better to have your own car so you can stop and enjoy every place you cross during your trip
Francesco
Hi David,
one quick question (which is the same you answered many times, but the period is slightly different so I'll bother you once again -sorry for that):
we are going to do the ring road end April/beginning May, with just few detours to Husavik and Borgafjordur, of course weather permitting…do you think it is worth taking a 4X4 (big? or a Jimmy would do the trick?) or a 4X2 is enough?
Thanks!
24
Are you driving on F-Roads? Let me know 🙂
Mindy
Hi David! Great post – thank you for this info! I see you keep getting asked this same question a lot, but since each time it's a little different, I need to add one more…
I'm traveling solo in the very beginning of September from Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón and back and trying to figure out if I can do 2WD, 4WD or if I need 4×4. I plan to drive the Ring Road most of the way, but I know with sightseeing in general, even with the Golden Circle, some of that will take you off the Ring Road. Having never traveled in Iceland before, I just wasn't sure what car was needed, and I don't want to get the wrong thing just because I want to save money (which I do, of course!). : ) Any thoughts?
Thanks!
24
You don't need a 4WD, it is more than enough with a regular 2WD
Steven
Hi,
I'm traveling solo at the end of November and staying in Reykjavik for a few days. Do you think its worth renting a 4×4 for a day or two? Would it be ok to go solo and any recommendations of places to drive (Reykjavik and back same day)?
24
I would recommend you a small 4×4 like Suzuki JImny, it is perfect for 1-2 persons…
Unknown
Hi David!
I have read through all your advice and they are great!
We are a group of 6 looking to explore Iceland from 17th Aug to 24th Aug. We realised that it is still within the peak period so the car rental rates is really expensive. We are intending to rent a 5-seater instead of a 7 seater as the price difference is pretty extreme. We wanted to check if Iceland is strict about the number of people in the car? If it will be an issue.
And also, as its still not the winter season yet, is there any place/attraction that you would highly recommend us to visit?
And if there are any chances of us catching the Northern Lights.
If you could help us, it would be awesome!
Thanks for being so helpful!
24
Yes, Iceland is very strict and you will get problems with the police if you do this… I recommend you to check Dettifoss, Landmannalaugar and Askja.
About Northern lights… you have to be lucky 🙂
ET
Hello David,
I'm planning to go to Iceland for 7 days in early July.
Apart from Blue Lagoon and the "inside volcano" tour, my plan is to go Golden Circle, Vik, Jokulsarlon and all the way south to Djupivogur.
Then from Djupivogur drive north to Dettifoss, Asbyrgi and Akureyri… and then from Akureyri go back to Reykjavik.
I'm not planning to take F roads. For all this trip, do I need to rent a 4×4?
Thanks
ET
24
Hello, you don't need a 4×4. But remember to drive to Dettifoss by the west road, it is a non f-road
Unknown
Hi David,
We will be in Reykjavik from May 9-15. We had thought to make that our base but are wondering if that's the right decision.
With 4 full days, what would you recommend we see? Should we consider 1 night out-of-town?
Should we have a rental car the whole period?
Fabulous that you're doing this work! Thanks!

Hi! I would recommend you to see South Iceland. 4 full days is perfect for that 🙂 Please check our article about South Iceland
TR in CA
How is hitch hiking in your beautiful country?
I imagine it is safe.
Does anyone give tourists a lift? Is it possible to hitch to some of the more remote towns?
thank you, Tom
24
It is 100% safe,
you can go everywhere you want…

Hi david
I am planning a trip from May 22 to June 1. I am planning on renting a vehicle, and was planning on renting a 4×4. But reading the article, it looked like most of the F roads are closed until Mid Jun. Since they are closed would it be safe to say that a 2wd car would be good enough?
24
A 2wd car is good enough if you don't drive over F-Roads 🙂
Anonymous
Hi David,
How would you spend one day driving in South Iceland?
Thanks for you help!
24
Where would you like to go? One day is not enough for a complete south Iceland trip…
Unknown
We decided to go to (1) Blue Lagoon, (2) Reyjkavik and Food Walking Tout, (3) Golden Circle…so we'll have one more day to drive somewhere. South looked good but we're open.
Ideas?
Also once at Blue Lagoon, anything else to see while out there?
Thanks!
24
When are you coming?
I would recommend Landmannaluagar
Unknown
Arriving May 10.
Anything else near Blue Lagoon to see?
Unknown
Oh, and we don't have a 4X4 car
24
Hi, I recommend you to check south Iceland. Take your 2WD from Reykjavík to Vik and stop by the waterfalls, black beach…

Hi,
I'm heading to iceland on a tight budget on the 17th of April, I need to hire a car and found a deal for 4 days car hire 426 Australian dollars, is this a good deal, have you heard good things from this company?
Any suggestions would be appreciated
24
What is the name of the company? Cars Iceland?
Yes, it is a well know company and many readers recommend it…

Hello,
Me and my wife plan to travel along the ring in early July starting from Reykjavik, going south and all the way back. Is it possible to cover this in 8 days ?
If yes, will a mini car(like a chevy spark) be good for this trip ?
Would this trip be incomplete if i miss onto the F-road experience ?
Thanks in advance.
24
Hi! It is just "fine", 8 days & ring road…
You can not do the F-Roads since you don't have much time 😉
I recommend you planned the trip very well so you will not miss much
Unknown
Hello, I will be in Iceland the end of August to mid September, will I be ok if I just hire a 2WD or do I need a 4WD. I know if I want to go to the highlands I need a 4WD but the cost is so much more so I might have to pass on going to that area.
24
If you will not drive over F-Roads you can just hire a 2WD.

Hi, very useful post!
Which model do you recommend among the following one for F-Roads?
– Dacia Duster 4×4
– Suzuki Vitare 4×4
– Nissan Qashqai 4×4
– Toyota RAV4
– Kia Sportage
– Honda CR-V
24
If you want a cheap solution: Dacia Duster 4×4
If you want to have the best option: Kia Sportage or Vitara
Anonymous
Many thanks for your prompt reply.
Do you think that the Vitara performs better the Duster on F-Roads?
24
Vitara is better car, no doubts.
Johan B.
I'd definitely recommend you guys rent with Cars Iceland. We were using the car for the first time so we really enjoy the ride! Do not miss the chance and ask for the services of a local company rather than the big international ones!
24
Thanks for your advice Johan

Hi David.
We are travelling to Iceland in July. There will be three of us. What vehicile should we rent for luggage space and some of the main Road #1.
Thanks
24
I would say Dacia Duster 4×4 if you drive manual or similar. It is cheap and it is a good 4×4 🙂
Miguel
I have now used http://www.reykjavikauto.com on my trip to Iceland, excellent rates and car have been great. I found the staff friendly and welcoming. Airport pick up too, which I think is so much easier than offsite. Have been able to get great price as I booked ahead. Their cars are brand new.
24
Thanks Miguel, good to know!

Hello Gwee,
It is fine with a 2WD 🙂

we are traveling in July around the Ring Road for 8 days. Do not think we will go on F roads due to time constraint. What models of car rentals would you recommend for a comfortable ride (2 people)? I imagine there will be busses and traffic and we don't want to be blown off the road.
24
Hello! You don't need to drive over F-Roads if you have 8 days. I would recommend you a small car, the model is difficult to say because it is different depending on the car rental. For example: Kia Rio, Peugeot 108 or Toyota Yaris

Hi David,
We are traveling with 7 adults + 1 infant.
Do you think is there any motorhome could fit us?

Hello,
There are no vehicles for 8 persons in Iceland (sleeping places). I would recommend you to hire a big Camper and them a small one (2 vehicles).

Hello David,
we are a young couple seeking to visit Iceland mid June. We want to make day trips from Reykjavik and visit:
1. The Golden Circle
2. Snaefellsnes Peninsula
3. The south shore till Vik:
4. Reykjanes Peninsula
What type of car do you recommend? Do you recommend that me make any extra insurances except the CDW?
Best regards,
Sinziana and Alex

Hello! You will need a regular 2wd, if you want to save money I recommend you to book in advance 😉

Hi David,
We are a group of 7 pax (only 1 driver) that will be travelling to iceland this mid-Nov. We will be renting a 9-seater car but my concern is if it can fit 7 large luggages (size btw 28" to 30")?
24
Hello! I think so, but it is better if you ask directly your car rental agency 😉

Hi David,
What a great source of info. I will be travelling with my neice and we are thinking about a camper van. Do you have any recommendations for rental companies. We plan to drive the ring road in late May.
Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hi Joanne! Thanks for your comment! We don't use to recommend companies sorry… Check our camper article and judge yourself!

Hello 🙂
Are the dates mentioned above strict to open F-roads? We have plan to visit Landmannalaugar June 9th. Is there any "border" which we can not cross? What will happened when we will use road F208 before this date?
Thank you for answer

Hello! It will be impossible if the road is close… It is simple, the vehicle will get stock and you will need to call 112… 😉

Thank you David 🙂

Hi, we just came from Iceland in a wonderful 12 days round trip. We had the car (Suzuki Jimmy 4×4) with Cars Iceland (www.carsiceland.com) and we did not have any problem at all. The car was ok for f-roads and it did work well for us (2 persons). Regards from Portugal
24
good to know, thanks!

Hello, is it easy to reach by car the Landmannalaugar main hut to start a trek on our own ? My wife is worried we won't make it with a rental car…
Unknown
I also have the same question! Is it possible to make it with a 4×4 like a Jimmy?
Thanks 🙂
24
It is not difficult at all 😉

David,
This is a very helpful service. We're doing a 2 day stop-over in Iceland (did the same last year). Last year we rented a car in Reykjavik & toured the Golden Circle & went to the Blue Lagoon. This year I'm going to rent at KEV. Do you know which companies are open around midnight at the airport? Also, we are planning to tour the South Coast (Vic, etc) one day and are looking for a shorter (maybe 2 hours) trip for our other day. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank You, Jim
24
Hello Jim,
Thanks for your comment. All companies or 95% are open 24 hours during summertime 😉

Hi David,
Thanks for this very informative article. We are planning on a 10-12 day trip (1 Sep 2016). Is a 4×4 necessary at this time? More importantly I wanted to know which insurances are absolutely good to have.
24
It depends on your travel plans. I would say no but it depends if you are planing to drive over the highlands.
Missy
I am traveling with my boyfriend in the beginning of July. We have not yet planned our route. In July, will we be able to access the whole island without a 4×4?
24
Yes, absolutely

Hello,
I will be visiting Iceland in July first week and plan on traveling around the ring road. Would i need a 4×4 car or even a small car like Hyundai i20 is good for 2 people ?
Thank you!

It is enough with a regular 2wd car 100%

What a wonderful resource! For a family of four (including 2 tall kids) with luggage and camping gear (4 suitcases and 2 large duffle bags) over 10 days, what vehicle would you recommend? I don't know if we will be using F roads, but I would like to keep our options open (either manual or automatic is fine). Thanks!
24
I would recommend you a 7 seater like Kia Sorento or similar, it is perfect for a ring road driving…

My wife and I will be traveling to Iceland in August and while we're very excited for our vacation, the one negative thing I've read time and time again relates to sketchy practices on the part of Iceland's rental car companies. Trip Advisor and other forums detail what can only be described as rental car horror stories… Customers describe being charged for bogus damages or pre-existing damages, some to the tune of thousands of dollars. What I have gleaned from these posts is to photograph and/or video the vehicle before you leave the lot to show the condition in which it was received, document every dent, ding and scratch on the paperwork and show the rental agent, and always take out the optional ash, sand and gravel insurance. David – I'd love your insight on the topic and I know you don't like to recommend specific rental car companies so if anyone else has suggestions as to a more reputable company or companies to avoid, I'm all ears and appreciate the feedback.
24
Hi!!!
I am sorry I don't want to recommend a company. I can also say forums of trip advisor in Iceland are 100% manipulated, so it is difficult to trust a comment (50% are fake).
What do i recommend?
Check yourself, read reviews and choose local car companies… You will get more chances of getting a better deal and service
PhyllisKYY
Hello, I am planning a trip to Iceland for my parents and myself in late July to early August for 2 weeks, and we are looking to rent a Suzuki Jimny 4×4. However, I read that other cars have higher clearance heights which works better when crossing rivers. Are there any of such instances where we will need to drive across rivers? And where are these places? Thanks a million!
24
I personally do not like Jimny, it is too small and it looks very insecure. This is my personal opinion… Just take a bigger one like Duster or Qashqai
Lele
Hello David. Great blog and thanks for your help with comments which is very appreciated and helpfull.
I am travelling to Iceland with my couple at the end of August arriving on 21st night and coming back on 28th afternoon (6.5 full days).
My question is whether you would recommend us a trip round the island or just the most touristic places around the South area.
Also I would like to know if on that dates you would recommend us a normal 2WD car or a 4WD is recommended to drive throught this area to the main monuments by our own rather than arrange for excursions with private companies.
Thanks for your reply 🙂
24
Hello Lele! Thanks for your comment!!!!! I recommend you a combination of South Iceland and Snaefellsnes. A normal 2wd is enough for your travel proposes 🙂

Hi David,
Thank you for the significant information. Traveling for 21 days with two kids, planing to do the ring road and the western fjords. is it a suitable plan for 21 days? which 4×4 vehicle is most reliable? wouldn't like to have breakdown problems to handle..with kids
Thanks
24
It is perfect for 21 days… I recommend always 4×4 vehicles 🙂

Thanks! which vehicle you think is better Nissan Qashqai or Ducia? (both 2015-2016 and almost the same price). Thanks you!!
24
Hello! They are both almost the same… I would choose Qashqai personally
Anonymous
David Hello,
I'll be visiting Iceland during mid- till end August, with my two kids. We have 21 days yet I thought to skip the east and to have a more relaxed travel with time to feel the places and not just rush through. I therefore thought to cross from the south coast to myvatn area via F26 (or other?). I'm renting a 4×4 Qashqai, but since I'm traveling with kids and a sole car i don't want to drive the road without additional vehicle. Can you recommend an agency or a guided riding-tour / some sort of motorize accompanying that will drive the road with me for the day (is it a day travel?). Thank you very much in advance!
24
Hello! We don't like to recommend agencies sorry… It is better if we keep Iceland24 neutral 100%
Ankur
Hey I am Travelling to Iceland from 11 to 21st September. It will be 4 of us and we want to do a ring road trip.
Should we take a 4X4? What will we miss if we don do the F roads?
24
I always recommend 4×4… You don't need it but I always recommend a 4wd vehicle if you want to drive safer.

Hi David,
I'm traveling to Iceland at the end of this week. Do you think it is necessary to purchase the additional dust/gravel/ash insurance protection when renting from Cars Iceland? We will be doing a lot of driving.
24
Hi! I always say insurance are like playing a lottery… I would take it just to be 100% safe 😉
.
Hello David, I've been reading your blog for the past days and I find it very very helpful. Thanks a lot for all the effort you put it into it! I have a question and I was wondering if you know the answer. I am planing to drive onto F26 for 2 days and while I know driving offroad if forbidden I was just wondering if there are spots where you can park along the road and set up a tent? My plan was to stop closer to intersection of F26 and F881. I really appreciate if you let me know your thoughts on this. Thank you!

Hello! I recommend you Nydalur 🙂

Hi David,
Excellent post on Iceland very helpful!
There are three of us travelling to Iceland in July…cars are very expensive especially split between the three of us only.
We are staying in Reykjavik, driving up to Akureyri/seeing Lake Myvatn and then back down to Reyjavik. Would a Dacia Logan or Toyota Yarris Terra be okay? We want to stay away from the expensive SUV's. How is the road from RKJ to Akureyri/Lake Myvatn?
24
Hello! A Dacia Logan will be more than enough since we have good weather in July
Fabian
Hello David, great website and suggestions. Early August me and my partner will visit Iceland for 2 weeks. We are planning on doing the ring road with side trips to Landmannalaugar, the Golden circle and driving road 35 (Kjölurroute) from Akureyi to Flúdir. Do we absolutely need a 4×4 for this trip as we do not hit F roads? And if so, is a Suzuki S-Cross fine for the job? Thanks in advance!
24
Yes, you need a 4×4. It is illegal not to do so and you will destroy the car 🙂
S-Cross should be fine for this job (nice car by the way)

Dear David,
Thank you for a blog. I've found it really helpful. We plan to visit Iceland during early September and encountered a slight problem, while planning our trip. Since we plan to start our trip along south coastline, until Jökulsárlón and will be going on our way back through Landmannalaugar, it will include F208 road. As I have read in your other post, F208 road from the south is tricky and you do not recommend to take a 2WD car. How bad is it, because we do not want to go all the way around, in order to take F208 from the north? Would appreciate your reply.
Kind regards,
Arthur.
24
You need a 4×4 car if you want to do this, 100% sure
Denisa
Hi David,
Myself and my boyfriend are travelling next week to Iceland for him to do the Laugavegur Ultra Marathon. We want to rent a car and are shocked at the high prices. I thought we'd definitely need a 4×4 to get there, then i read your comments and I was wondering whether the weather being nicer makes a difference and we can get away with something smaller?
Thank you!
Denisa
24
Yes, but Iceland has a special weather… Impossible to predict so I recommend you an economic vehicle
Anonymous
David, You certainly are an outstanding person to be answering all these questions. I'm going to add one, or two, more. My daughter and I will in in Iceland the fist week of August. We'll be visiting points on the Golden Circle as well as Solheimajokull glacier. Our hotel, ION Hotel, recommended we get a 4×4. This seems a bit excessive after reading all the above comments. I'm not sure if they recommended a 4×4 because the gravel road to the ION is a bit rough or what. Are you familiar with the road into the ION? And if so, what's your recommendation on a car for us? Thanks so much! Gail
24
I am not familiar but we always recommend 4×4 vehicles if you are planning to drive F-Roads like Landmannalaugar or Askja 😉
yt
Hi, we have 5 people going to Iceland in late September for 8 days. Would you recommend a 4×4 and any particular models? Thanks!
24
I recommend you to have a economic 4×4, it is more secure
Anonymous
Hello David, congratualtions to your post!
4 of us will go to Iceland between the 12th and 16th of October. Will spend there 3-4 days only. My questios is that we need the 4×4 or SUV car if only want to make and see the Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon and (if we lucky) Northern Light tour!
Thanks,
Peter
24
You don't need a 4×4 but I always recommend this vehicle if you want to be 100% more secure.

We are travelling to Iceland in August and would like to,know what would be the best vechicle to rent to go to the follwing places glacier hikes and climbs, inside the valcanoe, golden circle, Thingvellir National Park, Into the glacier, glacier lagoon etc. We were thinking of a Toyota Rav4 would be good. What is your opinion. Also is it neccessary to take all insurance coverage such as vechicle theft, wind and sand damage. Is this vechicle considered a 4 x 4
24
Hello! It is a perfect car for your itinerary 🙂

Horrible experience with geysir. Don't recommend them at all. They invented negligible damage to the car and charged me an arm and a leg. Can happen to anyone.

2. Local car hire 100%
3. Probably the western road will open

Hi David,
My best buddy and I will be travelling Iceland for 10 days in August. As we dont really have a plan we thought that it might be the best to rent a car that has enough space so that you can sleep inside but then again its August and temperatures are in general higher. So, what car would you recommend that has enough place to sleep (2WD or 4WD) ot is this a silly idea as you can sleep in a tent all along? I am not sure if we need a 4WD as there is a lot to see already without hitting the highlands and F-roads but I might be wrong all together.
Thanks a lot for your answer.
best

Hello Markus, it is better if you ask directly at the rental companies. My experience says an Honda CRV suit your request as I have myself one and i sometimes do this 😉

Hi David, four of us have planned a trip from Hellnar to Skaftafell in July 2017. We are planning to hike in or around Snaefellsjokull park, Reykjanesfolkvangur, Thorsmork, and Skaftafell park. We aren't planning on crossing rivers with the car, but it seems like most of these areas are accessible only by F roads. Will we need a 4 WD to get to these locations in July, or will 2 WD be ok?
Thank you for your blog. This is a terrific resource.
24
Yes, you need to get a 4WD. It is illegal not to do so

Hello, myself plus 4 friends are doing the ring road for 10 days beginning September. We are not sure if we will be driving on F-Roads but would like to rent a 4×4 in case we do. What is suggested to for add-on insurance purchases? I've seen a lot of rental companies offering CDW but should I make the extra insurance purchase for sand/gravel?
24
I would recommend SCDW so the self risk will go down…

Hello David,

I am hesitating a little bit in the choice of 4×4 in case of river crossing. Which one would you suggest for these 2 places ?
Suzuki Jimmy, Suzuki Vitara, Dacia Duster, Kia Sportage, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4
Thanks in advance

Hi David, could you advise the possible road/weather conditions and safety precautions to take when driving between Reykjavik to/fro Golden Circle and Hofn/Jokulsarlon in late Nov-Dec? As it is our first time in Iceland, we are planning to keep strictly to Route 1 and paved roads.
We are also thinking of hiring a 4×4 as recommended but read somewhere that they may be susceptible to being blown off the road in gusty winds due to higher c.g. Which 4×4 vehicles would you recommend in such cases?

We recommend 4×4 during winter time. It is better in case of heavy snow, ice or strong winds… I recommend you Duster, Vitara, Qashqai, Sportage…

HI David, I and 3 adults are planning to travel in Iceland 10-14 October with day trips for the Golden Circle (Thingvellir), possibly to Snæfellsjökull (peninsula) and to Vik. Sightseeing and multiple stops along the way each day. No plans for offroading and only off the roads for parking areas or to take pictures. Do you recommend a 2wd or 4wd? If 4wd, is Dacia Duster the best option? What model for 2wd if recommended? Thanks for your blog!
24
We always recommend the safest option = 4×4 but I guess a 2wd is also enough. I hope you understand the answer

Thanks for your blog!
We plan to do the ring road with one detour to dettifoss, asbyrgi and husavik and another to snaefellsness peninsula. We also plan to visit fjardrarglafur on way to Hofn . We are travelling in July next year. Do we need a 4 wheel drive? We have little kid and no experience driving on unpaved roads
24
Hello! You don't need a 4×4 🙂
Robin
Hi David, you deserve a gold medal for keeping this thread alive!
We are planning on visiting Iceland in early September for about a week, driving from Hofn to Vik, and then to Gulfoss and Thingvellir. Then on to Hellnar, Stykkisholmur, taking the ferry (with car) to Brjánslækur, driving to Latrabjarg, and then to Isafjordur.
Is a 2WD still fine for the western portion? Also, how long would you estimate the drive from Latrabjarg to Isafjordur? I don't trust Google maps estimates. Thanks!!
24
Hello! Yes, it takes a lot of time to answer all of you guys 🙂 It is fine with a 2wd car
Johanna
Hallo!
For that portion, a 4×4 is advisable though if the road conditions are Ok, the 2WD will do.

Hello David, I'd like to know if it's illegal to drive regular cars on F-roads. I know it's for 4×4 vehicles, I just want to drive few km to approach to some points of interest I want to visit. Allways taking care and only driving if the road is similar to unsurfaced roads.
Thank you,
Dídac
24
It is illegal, yes! Be careful because you will pay a lot in case you have some problem on a F-Road

Hey David! First congrats on the great website. Its really cool you can help so many people with all this info here. Have a question. Ill be in Iceland for 4 days in middle December and renting a economy SUV, paying around US 300 dollars for all days. I know you recommend 4X4 but that would be to pricy for my budget. US 300 is top price for me since ill be traveling solo. What places would you suggest for me to be visiting based on road conditions. What sites are easier than other during winter? I know some roads will be closed and days light is only about 5 hours per day. I would like to make the most of trip.
24
I would recommend you South Iceland, you will get less snow and there is a lot to see in the South 🙂

Hi,
Thanks so much for your awesome blog! It really helps and is greatly appreciated. My girlfriend and I are planning to travel around Iceland for 1 week from September 4 to September 11. We are a bit underprepared for our roadtrip and have a question regarding whether or not to rent a 4×4 or just a 2wd like a VW golf. I have read a lot of your replies but am still a little confused due to the time of the year. We plan to drive around the ring road and be back in Reykjavik on the night of the 10th. We would like to see as much as possible of your amazing country but do not want to get into any 'sticky situations'. Could you please give me your advice on this and what the road conditions are like if you stick primarily to the main road.
Thanks so much!
Josh (Australia)

I think a VW Golf is more than enough!

Hi David!
Me and my girlfriend will travel in the last week of September in Iceland. We intend to hire a car to see Blue Lagoon, Black Beach, Silfra, some nice and famous waterfalls. What car do you think it is enough for us since we look for a budget solution. Thank you, Calin!
24
Hello! I feel like I am becoming a car expert! hahahah I recommend you a small vehicle (economic) if you don't want to spend a lot of money.

Yes, it is possible!

We will be there the last two weeks of June. Will roads be open and driveable?
Have the Northern Lights ever been seen in June?
We desire to visit Greenland also. Any tips there? It does not appear that there is much

Hello David, just want to thank you on this blog and how informative it is. You have helped me to pick a company and car for April 17 and saved me alot of pain in trawling the Internet for advice. All the questions asked and replies you have given were great in forming my choice. Thanks again! 🙂

Some car companies also offer 4G WiFi Router and GPS Navigation system. What would you recommend out of below-
-Using a GPS Navigation system or
-Using 4G Wifi router to connect to maps through our smartphones or
-Neither
Our 2 day road trip will be from Reykjavik to Jokulsarlon and back

Hello, I really think you don't need a GPS while in Iceland since there is only one route to drive 😉
If I need to choose I will use the 4G WiFi

Hi, what happened to prices in 2017? I want to book a car in the beginning of July 2017 and it's about 20% more expensive. Should I wait some time?

Your has been really helpful. My husband and I are planning to travel to Iceland at the end of February this year. I would like to do the Golden circle and visit the sites on the South Island upto Jokulsalron.
Is this possible in 3 nights and would it be better done with a touring company or should we hire a 4*4 SUV

I recommend you do it yourself. It is possible in 3 nights 😉

Hello David
If you rent an older car will the rental company be less strict on small damage such as stone chips etc? I just want a reliable vehicle not one I'm constantly worrying about damaging the paint work on.
many thanks

Fantastic blog. I'm planning a trip to Iceland in September and this is exactly what I was looking for because I wasn't sure if I should take the bus tours or rent a car.
Thanks very much.

Hi David,
We are traveling to Iceland to do a self driving tour of the Ring Road in late August and early September of this year. We will pick up the car in Keflavik, then tour southern Iceland, eastern Iceland (including Seydisfjordur and Borgarfjörður Eystri), then up north to include the Lake Mývatn area, Ólafsfjörður, Siglufjörður, and Blönduós. From there we drive to Hellnar, then back to Reykjavík. Most of our driving will be on the Ring Road, but we will travel on a few gravel roads such as 864 to Dettifoss and Asbyrgi. I believe we should be fine with a 2WD or AWD car. I don't think we need a 4×4 in early September. We have no plans on driving the F roads. What do you think?

Hi David
Thank you very much for all the good answers!
Me and my husband are planing an 8 days stay drivning the whole ring in late April. We will hire a 4×4 but are discusing whether a snorkle is necessary. Since the F-roads are closed we will drive mainly on the main road but of course with some smaller gravel roads from time to time. What is your opinion, is there a lot of water at the roads?
Thank you very much!

Hi David,
We are planning to visit Iceland in the end of August, we have 6,5 days to spend there. Do you think it will be enough time to see west fjords and south Iceland + Reykjavik + blue lagoon? We will be renting a car. What else would you suggest to see? Thanks

Hi, Nice website, very informative.
We are traveling to Iceland on the 18th April 2017 for a week and heading up to Husavik to do the Diamond circle. we are going to rent a car with pick up/drop off at the airport, do you think we will need a 4×4 or will a small car (Hyudai i10) sufice. I've looked at the webcams and the roads look ok but there is snow up there.
Any help would be appreciated
Regards Steven

Hallo!
Well, having a 4×4 in the north of Iceland is always a plus!
Though the diamond circle does not have any F-Road so it can be done with a 2WD.

Hey David. I'm taking my 8 yr old daughter to Iceland the first week of August. We plan on renting a car so we can drive the golden circle. I plan on staying on the main roads but might drive through Nesjavallaleið on the way back to Reykjavik. Do I need a 4×4 or can I just rent a compact car? I'm from NYC do you think driving those roads will be fine for me? Thanks for the help keep up the good work!
Johanna
Hallo!
If you will not be taking any F-Road, a 2WD car will do in August : )

Hey David, I forgot to ask one more question. How should we dress for first week in August? I read that in the summer the temp is only around 65F. Should I just wear T shirts and jeans? Or do I need a hooded sweatshirt or lightjacket. What about shorts? Thanks again!!
Johanna
Hallo!
Oh no! just a tshirt and jeans is a bad idea : (
Weather in Iceland is quite unpredictable and it can be very rainy, humid and windy. Do bring a good waterproof, windbreaker jacket. I'd skid the shorts, just wear layers. That way if it is a hot day, you can just take off some layers : )
Bless!

Hello David,
I must commend you on the patience in responding to so many queries. Thank you.
I've chosen Iceland for my honeymoon and we're both excited about a road trip. We are planning the ring road and also a trip down to the Westfjords. What car would you recommend. I was looking at something like a VW Polo automatic, but now wondering if a 4×4 would be required. Any advice please?
Warm regards,
Uday

You have shared a great blog. How can you get a car from a rent in a city like Iceland? You have done a good job by giving this information. Your Idea is excellent; I like your blog. Thanks for such post and keep it up.

My wife and I are planning a visit Oct 18-23, 2017. Thinking of a drive around the Golden Circle, to Vik and may be to Jökulsárlón, and to Snaefellsnes. Can we rent a 2WD vehicle, and if so, what vehicle

Hi David! Thanks for a great blog! I just wanna know if i'll be needing an IDL if my local driver's license is in Qatar. I hope no need. 🙂

Hey David,
I hope you still answer questions on how to get around Iceland.
My boyfriend and I are planning our first 2-weeks trip to Iceland in the beginning of August.
We are still unsure about how to get around as we are both students and want to get the most out of Iceland trip but of course with an eye on our budget.
We would like to go to:
Hraunfossar, Gulfoss, Húsavík, Godafoss, Mývatn, Askja, Vestrahorn, Jökulsárlón, Fjadrárgljúfur, Vík, Dyrhólaey, Þórsmörk, Gljúfrabúi and Hekla.
And we would like to camp.
What do you recommend us to do? Renting a car or buying one of the bus passes?
We would be so grateful if you could leave us some advice!!
Kind regards,
Paulina

I would recommend you to hire a car… It is more expensive but you will be able to get everywhere you want…

Hi David, we are visiting in October (12-22) and we have heard that the weather can change unexpectedly! What kind of car would you recommend if we are interested in traveling from Reykjavik and Selfoss and traveling to Jokulsarlon, Kirkjufell, Vatnajokull National Park, Diamond Beach, Geysir, and several of the waterfalls. Would you recommend a 4×4 with winter tires at this time?
Also, would you recommend staying in Selfoss? Or is there a better place to stay on the Golden Circle?

I am glad to find it. There are so many developers working on this part but this is one of the best innovative post ever. Thanks for such post.
